Rules for new cycle lanes explained

Warwickshire County Council has clarified the rules for drivers concerning the new cycle lanes on Weddington Road in Nuneaton.

As the cycle lanes are marked with a broken white line, this means they are ‘advisory’ and that vehicles are legally permitted to enter the lanes when necessary if they are clear of cyclists.

The benefits of the cycle lanes are that they give cyclists their own space on the road and help to increase drivers’ awareness of the presence of cyclists.

The scheme is due to be completed later this year, with a new Toucan crossing near Trent Road and cycle lanes over Leicester Road bridge. Cyclists will then benefit from a link to the town centre, train station and the wider cycle network in Nuneaton.

Cllr Alan Farnell, Leader Warwickshire County Council and a Weddington resident, said: “We are looking at ways to try and get cyclists into and out of the centre of Nuneaton in the safest possible way.

“Hopefully drivers will now better understand the rules, and drive safely and carefully when cyclists are using the lane.”
