New life to old clothes

The onset of colder days means digging out woollies and winter wear, providing the perfect opportunity to sort out the wardrobe and create some much needed space.

Householders may be unaware there is a multitude of ways they can give their old clothes a new lease of life, rather than just throwing them in the bin.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “There have never been so many ways to reuse the clothes that we no longer need.

“Wearable and reusable clothes, curtains and bed linen can all be taken to our Household Waste Recycling Centres around the county.

“What many people do not realise though, is that even unusable clothes and textiles can be used by many charity shops, who sell them on for textile recycling.  For example, Oxfam sends its surplus back-room clothes to Wastesaver, a textiles recycling plant in Yorkshire, which processes 120 tonnes of fabric each week.”
