Rugby Western Relief Road latest
Tarmac has now been laid on a third of the 6km long Rugby Western Relief Road.
The first two layers of tar macadam (commonly known as tarmac) has now been laid all the way from Potfords Dam to Bilton Lane – a distance of about 2.2km.
The final layer of macadam will be laid when other construction works have been completed on the £37m relief road.
Work in this area is continuing on the shared cycle and pedestrian facility and also shaping the verges and laying of the topsoil.
The construction of Potfords Dam Roundabout is due to start during the week commencing 20th November and is likely to take several months to complete.
This will require substantial traffic management measures at times, including temporary road closures and the use of temporary traffic lights on the existing A4071 Coventry Road.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Regrettably this may cause traffic disruption at times, but every effort will be made to keep these to a minimum.”
The precast concrete units, which will form Cawston Underpass, have been placed and the retaining walls at each end are currently under construction.
The major earthmoving operations that involved moving more than 30,000 tonnes along the line of the new relief road, including Parkfield Road from near Sow Brook to the new Parkfield Road Roundabout, have now been completed.
This allows work to start on major service diversions on Parkfield Road and the construction of a new tunnel between the two Cemex quarries adjacent to the existing Parkfield Road.
Work on the foundations of the Cawston Bridleway bridge has started, and shortly the construction of the new bridge over Sow Brook will start.
There have been a number of mini bus tours of the site. These have been held on Tuesday mornings and are proving to be very popular with those who have taken part. They are open to members of the public, but it is requested that children under 14 are accompanied by an adult.
If you would like to take part please contact Peter Bones on 01788 513125. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis but we will do our best to accommodate all those who are interested.
