Respect Yourself supports Parents Week

Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign is supporting the ninth annual Parent’s Week (Monday 20 October to Sunday 26 October 2008).

The aim of this special week is to celebrate the success of young parents across the county and the difficulties they have overcome.

Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign works with young parents and parents-to-be, and through various practitioners county-wide, offers advice and support on a variety of issues.

Kathy Siddle, Respect Yourself Campaign Co-ordinator, said: “Young parents face many barriers but with help and support they can move forward and improve the quality of life for themselves and their child.”

Case Studies

One visually-impaired young couple with a young child were referred to Bromford Support by their Health Visitor who had concerns about their living conditions.

Bromford Support provides a fixed support service in Nuneaton and a floating support service across Nuneaton and Bedworth, Rugby and North Warwickshire.

The young couple are now able to manage their own bills and accounts and do not have to depend on others. They said that this was a wonderful feeling and it makes them feel like a normal family.

Emma, their case-worker, said: “Both parents have now grown in confidence and self-esteem. “

Another young parent who recently moved into Warwickshire with her young daughter after a difficult few years elsewhere has found the county’s support services very helpful.

She said: “With support I can move forward, think of our future and give my daughter a good life. My life now is positive and with support I will keep going forward, building my confidence from day to day.”

Young parents will have the opportunity to talk about Warwickshire’s support services at Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign’s free consultation event next month.

‘Big Mouth’ will take place at the Playbox Theatre in Warwick on 25 November between 10am and 3pm, and is open to young parents.
