Bottom line boost for businesses who recycle
At a time when many local businesses are looking at ways to cut costs, Warwickshire County Council is launching a programme offering a package, which both saves cash and helps the environment.
At the moment in Warwickshire a majority of waste from businesses is going directly to landfill, when it comes to glass alone (which is 100 per cent recyclable), 80 per cent is heading straight to landfill.
As a result the county and borough/district councils are working with partners to find ways of helping businesses with their recycling collections, enabling businesses to recycle card, paper and glass at up to 30 per cent cheaper than landfilling their waste.
The scheme is initially being launched in the Leamington area, but talks are also underway in Nuneaton, Rugby, where the borough council already collects card/paper in the Business Improvement District.
The scheme has come about thanks to a landfill tax windfall of £160,000 from the Government through Business Resource Efficiency and Waste.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are looking to properly launch these recycling opportunities for businesses next month, which will initially mean things like glass recycling in Nuneaton, card and paper collections in Rugby, and a widespread recycling scheme in the Warwick district area.
“Landfill tax is due to increase again in the spring of next year from £32 a tonne to £40 a tonne, putting yet more pressure on local businesses who pay for waste collections. This recycling scheme offers a 30 per cent saving at the moment, and then even greater savings next year when the landfill tax levy increases.”
