Beat the autumn chipping rush
Gardens around Warwickshire are being pruned, clipped and chopped to within an inch of their lives, and householders are being reminded to book up now if they plan on using the county’s Wood Chipping Service.
For just £15 per hour a specialist team travels out to the person’s home, and reduces the piles of branches and clippings into handy mulch for the garden.
October and early November are always busy times for the service as people prune trees and shrubs.
The Home Wood Chipping Service allows residents to be ultra green by having their own prunings chipped at their home and then use them for mulching gardens.
Mulching is an excellent way of controlling weeds and clearing ground. It works by depriving light, without which the weeds cannot grow.
Ken Simons, Senior Forester at Warwickshire County Council, is asking gardeners in Warwickshire to think in advance about when they are likely to use the service to avoid a long wait, as experienced in previous years.
He said: “Why not share the cost with a group of neighbours? All we ask is that the material is contained in one pile for ease of shredding. It is surprising how much material can be shredded in one hour.”
The home wood chipping service will chip twigs and branches of up to 13cm (5 inches) in diameter leaving you with loose shredded chippings. These chippings can then be used as a weed suppressing, moisture retaining mulch or can even be composted.
