Outreach workers prove popular
Two new Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) out reach workers in Nuneaton and Bedworth are proving to be a success.
Mark Connors and Claire Rowland joined Nuneaton & Bedworth Leisure Trust back in April, and have been working with young people across the borough to give free, confidential information and advice relating to relationships and sexual health.
The initiative, which is supported by Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign and managed Nuneaton & Bedworth Leisure Trust, looks to engage with young men, hard to reach groups and young parents during evenings and weekends.
Since August, the RSE outreach workers have had contact with more than 700 people and operate regular drop in sessions around town centres.
Sarah Westlake from the Nuneaton & Bedworth Leisure Trust’s Youth Inclusion Team said: “This project has been successful because it allows young people the chance to talk to trained professionals in an environment they are comfortable in.”
Jenny Whateley, Warwickshire County Council’s Respect Yourself Co-ordinator, said: “The response to this initiative has been fantastic and we are encouraged by the number of people who have come forward for advice.
“Getting out to areas where advice is most needed ensures more people can get the information they need to make informed decisions about resisting peer pressure, delaying sex until they are ready and practising safe sex.”
