Supplementary Schools supported in Warwickshire

Community groups and individuals offering out-of-hours education are invited to get together to share ideas at an informal conference next weekend.

The free event at the Gap on Oakwood Grove in Warwick takes place 12pm until 4pm on Saturday November 8.  It is aimed at staff and leaders of Supplementary Schools, these are educational sessions taking place at evenings and weekends, participants are usually children and young people from ethnic minority communities, and the subjects for study are usually linked to culture or home language.

The conference will be a chance for staff from supplementary schools in the county to come together to meet one another and find out more about support with funding, resources and advice.  Also planned for the day are informative presentations from the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education, and Warwickshire County Council’s Extended Services and Children’s University teams.

Warwickshire County Councillor Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families said: “Supplementary Schools are set up by community groups, take place in community venues and very often rely almost exclusively on volunteers to run them.

“This conference will be an incredibly useful event for the staff involved to identify further support in order to help ensure these invaluable services are sustainable.”
