Rugby Home Care offers breakfast service

Rugby Home Care Service is offering more variety to customers to support independence and choice.

Warwickshire County Council’s Locality Provider Services have been looking at all aspects of the Home Care Service and customers stated that a cooked breakfast is a service that they would like to see being offered by the Home Care service

Zoe Bogg, Locality Provider Services Manager, for Warwickshire County Council said: “Rugby is set to try out this development within the Home Care Service, as after talking to customers we know that they would like more choice, particularly on occasions a cooked breakfast.

“We have proposed not to create a new service but to develop the existing Home Care Service. Future plans for Home Care in Rugby will help to offer a more culturally appropriate service, for example around religious needs during Ramadan.”

During the summer a working group was formed to plan the breakfast development, as Home Carers needed to be trained on safe meal preparation and health and safety, to ensure that the breakfast can be cooked in a safe way.

Margaret Fensome, Rugby Home Care Manager said
“The difference with the new service is that our Home Carers will spend more time with customers, giving them the necessary level of support to enable them to have a meal of their choice.”

The Rugby service is being offered to all new customers that have identified that they would like support to prepare a cooked breakfast in their own home. This request will be identified in the customers support plan that has been completed by a social worker.

Rupert Pullin, Rugby Team Manager, said
“As well as increasing customers choice, we believe it is particularly good for people who want to regain independent meal preparation abilities or who have short-term meal preparation difficulties,”

“We will be monitoring the meal service in Rugby and we will ask our customers to let us know how it works.”

Hazel Childs, a consultant from Food Wise, based in Warwickshire has been working with Home Care staff. She said: “We’ve been providing advice, and a brief refresher on food hygiene and how to use to temperature probes, fridge/freezer thermometers and other catering hygiene equipment.”
