Speaking Up for Others
Seven adults with learning disabilities from Rugby have recently finished a unique course that enables them to be spokespeople for other people with learning disabilities.
The students who all use Rugby Community Support Services, completed a ten week Peer Advocacy Course and now the course organisers will be linking the advocates with people who need help in getting their voice heard.
Gill Hall, Peer Advocacy Co-ordinator and Course Leader for ‘New Ideas’ - a Warwickshire advocacy service, said:
“We have already run the course for people in the Warwick and Leamington area and because of its success we moved on to offer it in Rugby.
“We look at communication, advocacy and using different forms of Multi Media.
“‘New Ideas’ is about people having their say, being listened to and being included.”
Therese Moone said that she is looking forward to helping others with learning disabilities:
“I have enjoyed the course and learnt some new things. I like to help others and know how difficult it can be for people with disabilities to get their views across.”
Sarah O’Shaughnessy Deputy Manager, Rugby Community Support Services said:
“Everyone has had a great time and are now looking forward to going on to become Peer Advocates for other people, which is fantastic.
‘It is a great confidence boost for the people involved, and is an excellent opportunity for them to provide a service to others, rather than always be on the receiving end,” she added.
