Home and jobs hope for Judkins

Homes and jobs is the hope for Judkins in Nuneaton after the owners of the site announced that, in partnership with Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, they have come up with some exciting new proposals for the Judkins site.

This means that the proposed soil treatment plant will not now go ahead.

TCSR Ltd had taken a planning application to Warwickshire County Council’s Regulatory Committee to develop the plant on the Judkins landfill site. This planning application has been approved but is being considered further by the county council’s regulatory committee.

However, the Waste Recycling Group Ltd owns the site, and taking into regard the current economic climate, and the company’s exciting hopes for the future use of the site, WRG has notified TCSR that it will no longer be supporting the proposed development.

WRG also expressed concerns at the possible harm the development could cause to its relationship with the local community - a relationship which it wants be a long term one in view of its hopes for the wider future development of the site.

WRG will now be meeting with both Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council as part of a new steering group to try and ensure the best possible future use of the site for the good of the business and the local community.

Leader of Warwickshire County Council, Cllr Alan Farnell, has stressed that today’s announcement does not mean that the planning application has been withdrawn.  However, even with planning permission, the development could not go ahead without the landowner’s support.
Cllr Farnell said: “After extensive discussion with Cllr Marcus Jones, the Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, we are convinced that there is a better potential way forward for Nuneaton and Bedworth, being mindful of the work on narrowing the gaps and increase in future employment opportunities.

“We were also moved by the public desire for a positive investment in Judkins to the benefit of Nuneaton. Therefore, we have been in discussion with WRG about long-term uses for the site, which will benefit local people, and WRG has now confirmed to me that it will not support TCSR’s proposals for a soil treatment plant at Judkins.

Cllr Marcus Jones said: “This is great news. Over the last few weeks there have been very delicate and confidential discussions with WRG, but we can now reveal that there are exciting proposals for developing the Judkins site and land around it for light industrial, office and housing. We look forward to announcing more details of these plans in the future.”

A spokesman for WRG, confirmed their position, saying: “Proposals for a soil treatment plant have been brought forward by the company TCSR who successfully sought planning permission from Warwickshire County Council for the facility.  While we are confident that the technology to be employed by TCSR would have been entirely appropriate, effective and safe, what we now have is a much better long-term set of proposals. Therefore we have notified TCSR that we will not support their temporary development on our site.

“WRG will continue to work with Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council to consider and bring forward longer-term development proposals that will meet the Councils’ strategic objectives for the area, bringing opportunities for new housing and jobs.

“Also we will shortly bring forward proposals for moving the approved site for the composting scheme further into the Judkins site and the redevelopment of the existing household waste recycling facility. We will ensure that any future proposals have the full understanding and support of local people.”
