Composters – the gift that keeps on giving

Residents are being urged to think green this Christmas and go for a gift that just keeps on giving.

Buying a loved one a composter for Christmas could provide them with the perfect push towards a greener life, saving them money and diverting organic waste from landfill, while also reducing global warming.

More than 30 per cent of household waste can be composted and organic ingredients from preparing the Christmas dinner can all be included from sprout, carrot and potato peelings to parsnips.

It is also important to add drier organic materials such as cardboard packaging from around your gifts, shredded paper and even holly twigs, to get good quality compost.

As well as diverting waste away from landfill, what is seen as rubbish by many can be transformed into a valuable resource.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Making your own compost creates a free source of soil conditioner and nutrients for the garden, with very little effort. When the warmer weather emerges, add grass cuttings and prunings and your well on your way to your free supply of compost, reducing the need to buy it.
“With recent research revealing that as a nation we waste a whopping £80.6 billion on unused goods and services every year, why not join the fight to reduce waste.”

Warwickshire County Council and Recycle Now are continuing to offer bargain compost bins at reduced prices with £4 being slashed off the cost of the first 1,000 compost bins sold to Warwickshire residents.

Prices start from as little as £13 for a 220 litre compost converter, including free delivery. Order online by visiting http://www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 077 0757 quoting reference HCA2.

Orders made by 11 December 2008 will ensure delivery before Christmas.
