Mince pie heaven is just a few steps away
Mince pies need not be such a guilty pleasure this festive season as the answer to tackling all those extra calories is just a few steps away.
Warwickshire’s residents are being called upon to get walking this Christmas in a bid to beat the 5lbs we all gain on average over the four-week festive period.
Just a few minutes a day can be enough and to help people get on track and a new mince pie calculator is now available to work out just how far you’d have to walk to enjoy each mince pie http://www.walkingworks.org.uk/calculator
Laura Vesty, Sustainable Travel Officer said "Cars are very convenient forms of travel but they make us lazy. It’s so easy to just jump in the car rather than consider other ways of travelling. It’s especially important to walk for short journeys of under two miles to stay in shape.
“To stay at a healthy weight, we should all increase our physical activity slightly. It’s thought that just walking for an extra 10 minutes a day can make all the difference.”
Living Streets, a national charity for pedestrians, has created a web site where people can pledge to walk more at http://www.walkingworks.org.uk, as well as developing the mince pie walking calculator.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "No one likes a mince pie more than me, but it is important to remember to keep walking regularly to stay a healthy weight and we’ll save a few pennies by leaving the car at home and walking short journeys too. So we can look forward to a new year where we gain a few pounds in our wallets, but don’t gain a few pounds in weight!”
