Warwickshire Waste Partnership, a partnership between Warwickshire County Council and the county’s districts and boroughs, is urging residents to give generously to their recycling boxes this Christmas in a bid to cut down the amount of waste generated by the festivities.

At Christmas time people generate around 30% more waste, most of which can be recycled.

The Royal Mail delivers about 150 million cards and packets each day during the pre-Christmas period. It is estimated that if not recycled, up to 1 billion Christmas cards (17 for every man, woman and child) could end up in bins across the UK.

And people use an estimated 750 million extra bottles and glass containers and 500 million drinks cans at this time of year. About 20% to 30% more glass and cans are collected each year over the Christmas period.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Recycling is an important activity for us all to take part in all year round but with more waste generated at Christmas than any other time of the year, it’s especially important to fill up our recycling boxes and place them out for collection.”
