New wheels for Phil’s farm trip
A Nuneaton man who has learning disabilities, and works on a Rare Breed’s Farm in Wolvey, has received funding for a bicycle, helmet and cycle training.
Philip Rowland, from Attleborough, has made giant strides in his life to live more independently and has worked at Coppicewell Rare Breed’s Farm for the past two years.
Phil lives with his mum and stepdad and travels five miles to the farm, however, because of the location of the farm there is no bus route that Philip can use, which meant staff at Aim 4, who support Philips work placement, were providing the transport.
Earlier this year Aim 4 staff successfully applied to the ‘Mervyn Jefferies Wishes and Dreams Fund’ for funding to enable Philip to have a bike, safety equipment and cycle proficiency training.
‘Mervyn’s Fund’ provides money for people with learning disabilities in Warwickshire, to get involved in activities and opportunities that fall outside of local funding criteria.
Phil said:
“It was a brilliant surprise to get the bike I couldn’t believe it.”
Phil also gained vital cycle training with the help of Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Team and has already been travelling to work on his bike.
Carol Collins from Aim 4 said:
“We are delighted that Philip has the opportunity to develop new skills. He is thrilled with his new bike and is now able to travel to work completely independently. Supporting people to be independent is what our service is all about.”
Aim 4 is based in Nuneaton and is part of Warwickshire County Council’s Employment Service for people with learning disabilities.
The Mervyn Jeffries Wishes and Dreams Fund was set up in memory of the late Mervyn Jeffries, who worked with people with learning disabilities.
