Fire crews worked through the night to tackle building blaze
More than 50 firefighters tackled a blaze at Whites Metals, London Road, Ryton, yesterday after calls from local residents raised concerns about the black smoke plume coming from the site.
Fire crews were alerted at 16:08 on Tuesday 23 December. 16 appliances were on site within the first hour, the first arriving just over 10 minutes after the initial fire call.
Incident Commander, Ken Probin said:
“On arrival there was already a huge black smoke plume and the fire had taken hold of the main building. Crews worked tirelessly to save the remaining buildings using specialist equipment such as high volume pumping units, water monitors and an environment protection unit. We managed to save one of the buildings on site, but the rest were already severely fire damaged upon arrival.”
Crews from Leamington, Rugby, Coleshill, Binley (West Midlands), Atherstone, Kenilworth and Brinklow were all on scene within the first hour.
Crews are still in attendance this morning damping down the site. An investigation into the cause of the fire is now being carried out.
