Council considers concessionary travel scheme

A Warwickshire County Council review of concessionary travel for young people in the county is recommending the development of a business case and feasibility study for the scheme.

A report being received by Children, Young People and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee next Thursday (January 15) outlines the next step towards cheaper travel on Warwickshire’s buses for young people.

A review panel was set up to examine the scheme and undertake initial research into the issues following lobbying from Warwickshire Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs).

The panel has concluded that the next move is to commission a specialist transport consultant to develop a business case. The funding required for this is subject to budget decisions being taken by the county council in February.

Cllr John Whitehouse, of the Children, Young People and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee and Chair of the review panel, said: “The committee is receiving an in-depth report which shows our findings to date.

“The panel concluded that no further progress could be made on this review until it has a clear indication of the likely patronage levels and costs associated with introducing a young people’s concessionary travel scheme in Warwickshire.

“The scrutiny committee will be discussing the report on January 15 and it is recommended that a further update is made after the county council has set the budget next month.”

The Children, Young People and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee is a public meeting held on January 15, 10am at Shire Hall, Warwick.
