Warwickshire achieves exam results success

Warwickshire’s GCSE success rates have improved by more than three per cent on last year.

In the 2008 results published today (Thursday), 51.4 per cent of Warwickshire’s 16-year-olds gained five or more GCSE grades A* to C or equivalent including English and mathematics.

It is also the first time that more than half of the county’s pupils have attained this level at GCSE, which is considered the most important qualification for employment and further study.

Shona Walton, Head of Secondary School Performance for Warwickshire County Council, said: "These results represent a great deal of hard work by students and teachers, and we congratulate them on their success. The rise in the proportion achieving good qualifications in English, mathematics and vocational subjects is especially encouraging.”

The rise in the previous national measure of five or more GCSE grades A* to C or equivalent rose even more dramatically, from 58.1 per cent to 64.4 per cent. This means that nearly two thirds of Warwickshire pupils gained these higher grade qualifications, many of them in vocational subjects.

In addition, almost 95 per cent of Warwickshire children have gained Level 1 qualifications in functional English and mathematics, with 57 per cent gaining the higher Level 2 qualification in both these subjects.

Results at A Level also improved considerably. The average point score per student rose from 717.6 to 735.5, and the average point score per examination entry rose from 205.9 to 209.1. Fifteen points is the equivalent of an AS Level grade and 30 points is an A level grade.
