Young people have designs on beating bullying

As part of anti-bullying week in November, children and young people got creative by designing posters and t-shirts to support the cause.

On Thursday 18 December a prize-giving event took place at Warwickshire Police HQ, with Head of Warwickshire County Council’s Division for Young People Hugh Disley, and Chief Constable of Warwickshire Police Keith Bristow in attendance.

Children up to the age of 11 were asked to design a T-shirt with an anti-bullying theme, using words or pictures. Joshua, aged 4 from Newburgh Primary school came up with the winning design with the slogans ‘stamp out bullying’ and ‘be a winner, don’t bully’.  Joshua received a t-shirt printed with the design and an art set.

Meanwhile, young people aged 11 to 19-years-old were asked to design an anti-bullying poster, the winning design chosen by VOX, the County Youth Panel was created by 12 year old Jaye, a pupil at George Eliot School and Community College.

Jaye received vouchers and the accolade of having his poster printed and circulated to schools and youth settings across the county and used in plasma screen displays in some schools.

Five runners up in each category received shopping vouchers to reward their efforts.  The competitions were organised by Warwickshire’s Anti-bullying Partnership in conjunction with Warwickshire Police and all of the entries can be viewed online at Warwickshire Police’s The Zone website http://www.wpthezone.co.uk.

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, said: “Congratulations to the competition winners. I know this is a really important issue for young people in the county, it was clearly brought home to the Cabinet of the County Council last month when a presentation made by the Members of the County Youth Panel identified this as a priority for them.”
