Traffic signals for Griff roundabout
Work gets underway on Monday to install traffic signals on the Griff roundabout in Nuneaton.
The busy roundabout, where the A444 and B4113 Coventry Road meet, will get traffic signals on three of the existing six arms.
The contractor appointed by Warwickshire County Council to carry out the work is Wrekin Construction Company Limited, and when they get underway on Monday, it will take about 20 weeks to complete with a cost of £1.35m.
Junctions getting signals are the A444 from the M6, A444 to Nuneaton and B4113 Coventry Road (Hill Top). In addition, there will be carriageway widening in some areas, new footways and cycleways, and the roundabout will be resurfaced.
These improvements are being carried out because of a continuing poor injury accident record at the roundabout.
In the three-year period between July 2004 and June 2007, there were 29 recorded injury accidents at the roundabout, making this location the second worst `cluster site’ in Warwickshire.
The project also aims to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists crossing the high approach and exit speeds of the roundabout arms.
Due to the traffic sensitivity, the whole works will be carried out under a 30mph speed restriction. Most of the construction works which affect traffic flow will to be carried out at night under lane closures. For works carried out in the daytime, most of the running lanes will be maintained in order to minimise disruption.
For about 3 weeks in May, when the resurfacing is carried out, there will be night-time road closure on the following arms:
A444 to Nuneaton;
B4113 Coventry Road (Hill Top);
A444 from M6; and
St David’s Way
The road closure diversion for A444 to Nuneaton will be via B4113 (Hill Top) and vice versa, and the diversion for A444 from M6 will be via St David’s Way and vice versa.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The aim of these works is to improve the safety at this very busy roundabout.
"Unfortunately it will mean some delays in the coming weeks and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause. Please be assured that we will endeavour to carry out and complete the work as speedily and efficiently as possible.”
