Educational support for young parents

School-age parents can get the educational support they need to stay on track, thanks to new guidance for schools from Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign.

A new baby is a life changing experience, but getting pregnant when still at school sees the added pressure of having to juggle exams and coursework that could help shape future career prospects.

With this in mind, some young mothers may choose to leave mainstream education to look after their newborn.

So in association with Warwickshire County Council’s Early Intervention Service (Teaching & Learning), the Respect Yourself Campaign has issued this guidance, which covers the notification process, health and safety issues, and looks at issues and practicalities, as well as listing some support for the young parent-to-be.

Natalie Parsons, School Age Parents Coordinator from the Early Intervention Service in Warwickshire, said: “Sometimes young mothers-to-be find continuing education at school difficult as the pregnancy and birth can present further barriers to accessing education.

“However with support from EIS, Connexions and their school to remove these barriers, they can continue with their education and exams.”

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, said: “If young parents or parents-to-be are struggling with main-stream education but want to continue learning, then programmes providing tailored educational support in Warwickshire really can improve their life chances.”
