Bungalow houses peaceful approach to care
Rugby Community Support Services have opened a new service at a bungalow in the Hillmorton area of Rugby – for 12 local adults with learning disabilities.
The service is the first of its kind for people with learning disabilities because it is for people who are older or who need a quieter environment and a slower pace.
Staff and people who use the service believe that it is proving to be a great success.
On a day to day basis, people at Bromwich Road do cooking, crafts, musical activities and life–story work, as well as being supported to access the local community.
Pauline Davies who uses the service said: “I like coming here, it is nice and quiet, and we have started making cards which we a hoping to sell”.
Paula Chaffer, Day Centre Officer, who leads the project said: “All the people who use the service have settled well and the feedback has been very positive.
“We have a member of staff trained to lead Reminiscence sessions, which is also very beneficial for people who have Dementia,” added Paula.
Rugby Community Support Services are part of Warwickshire County Council’s Adult Health and Community Services.
Alison Malcolm, Manager of Rugby Community Support Services, said: “Our aim is to offer services that are more tailored to peoples’ individual needs, so having a service that is available for older people with learning disabilities, some who have Dementia or similar conditions is already proving of great benefit.”
