Mobile Library delivers family gem
A unique piece of family history has been discovered thanks to Warwickshire County Council’s Mobile Library Service.
When Mrs Auckland from Brandon borrowed a book for her husband on British village life, little did she realise that the book featured a family photograph which had never been seen before.
Mrs Auckland, who is a regular mobile library borrower, picked out the recently published ‘Photographic History of Village Life’ for her husband to browse while he recuperated from an operation.
Mr Auckland, who is 81, was thrilled to find a photograph of his father Mr Fred Jowett in uniform as the "local AA Man”, at Gaydon Crossroads in South Warwickshire. Sadly, Mr Auckland was only 9 years old when his father died and he was delighted to find the photograph from the early 1930s of his father “standing post”.
Mr Auckland said: “I was leafing through the book enjoying the photographs of farming in days gone by and it was a lovely surprise to discover a picture of my father that I hadn’t seen before”.
Mobile library driver Keith Bennett added: “Mr and Mrs Auckland’s serendipitous find made my day - the pleasure that the service brings is one of the "hidden gems" of being a mobile library driver.”
