The recycling message hits home in Warwickshire
Warwickshire County Council’s portfolio holder for the environment has welcomed a report by the Local Government Association calling for retailers to either reduce the packaging they use in their goods or to make greater contributions towards the cost of collecting it.
Cllr Martin Heatley has commented on the LGA’s report by urging supermarkets to follow the advice given and to reduce waste thereby reducing costs for councils who have to send material that cannot be recycled to landfill sites, at a cost of £32 per tonne in landfill tax.
Cllr Heatley said: “We welcome the LGA report and hope that it has the desired effect on the amount of waste being sent to landfill sites.
“Residents have taken very well to any county council initiatives that have involved recycling and minimising the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Landfill waste has financial implications for the taxpayer as well as environmental consequences so it benefits us all to keep it to a minimum.”
