Strictly Come Bhangra Dancing

A Bhangra dance company have given top marks to a group of Nuneaton adults with learning disabilities after they completed a 10 week dance course.

Amanda Stephenson and Manjit Gill, directors of Birmingham based Silhouette Dance Company offer a variety of Dance and Fitness sessions for people of all ages. The duo recently ran sessions for people using Nuneaton Community Support Services, part of Warwickshire County Council’s Community Support Services.

The Dance sessions held at Stan Williams Sheltered Housing in Attleborough, were funded through Warwickshire County Council’s Community Arts Project and were aimed at developing fitness and self-confidence.

Bhangra dance is about bringing people together explained Manjit, “It’s been great fun and at the same time builds self-esteem, health and fitness,” she added.

“We work with people of all ages and it is a really creative and dynamic form of expression and communication,” explained Amanda.

Di Dalton, from Nuneaton Community Support Services added:
“The people who use our service have been spending valuable time at Stan Williams Sheltered Housing helping the older residents with things like shopping and making drinks.  The relationship between the older people and our services users has been an important link. It has developed mutual respect, understanding and friendships.”

“The dance project has been an extra bonus and it seemed only natural to hold the sessions there.  A number of the residents have enjoyed watching the dancing. Who knows? Next time some of them may even want to join in!”
