According to the latest figures from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, only 5.8 per cent of young people aged 16-18 in the county last year were classed as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) - compared to an average of 7 per cent in the West Midlands and 6.7 per cent across England.

The countywide figure also matches that of 2007, showing a continued success for organisations - including Connexions and Warwickshire County Council – that help young people understand their options.

The number of young people in Warwickshire whose status was ‘not known’ was 2.5 per cent – the lowest in the West Midlands.

Graham Hollowell, head of Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire, said: “A process known as the September Guarantee was initiated in Coventry and Warwickshire to ensure post-16s have the best start when leaving school.

“The latest figures reflect our commitment to helping as many young people find a positive destination into Education, Employment or Training by the September after they leave school.

Hugh Disley, Head of the Division for Young People at Warwickshire County Council, said: “It is pleasing that so many young people in Warwickshire are taking advantage of the help and support offered by the Connexions Service, especially those who may find the transition more difficult than others.

“As the recession bites deeper it is crucial that young people realise that they will need to have both the skills and confidence to improve their chances of employment.”
