Young people celebrate positive contribution

Celebrating the successes of young people who are ‘making a positive contribution to their local community’ is the aim of a major event in Warwickshire later this month.

Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme is holding a celebration at the Assembly Rooms in Leamington Spa on Tuesday 28 April.

The event will be opened by Warwickshire’s former European and Commonwealth swimming champion, Adam Whitehead, and will feature performances by young people from across the county who have all been involved in projects that help tackle disaffection amongst young people, and youth crime.

The line-up includes a performance of Mamma Mia by the Stratford Music Centre; Samba Drumming by The Gap Community Centre; three songs with actions by ‘Take a Break’; and, a dance performed by the Stop Knife Crime project based at the Brownsover and Benn PODS in Rugby.

Rap group ‘Streetz R Watching’ are also set to return with songs from their second album highlighting issues affecting young people including alcohol misuse and racism.

All projects involved in the celebration event have been set up to improve the lives of young people and make a positive impact on their local community.

Michael Maguire, head of Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, said: “The celebration event will provide young people with a chance to showcase just some of the successes achieved across the county.

“We are really pleased that so many people have agreed to be involved in this and I’m sure it will be a very enjoyable evening for everyone attending.”
