Young people urged to get on the roll - Warwick

Warwickshire County Council has begun its campaign to encourage more and more people to use their vote by targeting young people voting for the first time in a county council election.

The elections for both the county council and the European Parliament are being held on June 4th and for many young people who will be 18 on or before 4 June, this will be the first time they have been eligible to cast their vote.  Council officers are urging them to ensure they are on the electoral roll before the deadline of May 19.

Lauren Wright of Warwick will be using her vote, saying:  “Young people need to remember that voting in a county council election is important. It has a direct effect on the local community and matters that will affect their daily lives – transport, education, community safety, environmental measures.  We must have a say in who makes these decisions.”

Nathan Deveruex, also of Warwick, joined the call for young people to use their vote, saying:  “I think people tend to think it is the older generation that vote in council elections.  There’s probably some truth in that so young people need to make sure they get to the polling stations so that all the community is represented.”

Jim Graham, chief executive of Warwickshire County Council joined the call for all sections of the community to register to vote, saying.

“The county council plays an important part in the daily life of all of our young people throughout every day.  We are committed to consulting with them and ensuring that they play a major role in local decision-making.

“The first, and one of the most important, steps towards their doing so is for them to use their vote and you cannot vote unless you are registered.”
