Help to make your garden grow

Warwickshire’s residents can now support local recycling initiatives and put green waste to good use by buying compost at some of Warwickshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Warwickshire County Council, in partnership with Midlands Composting & Recycling Ltd, H.W.Martin Waste Ltd, Waste Recycling Group, The Shakespeare Hospice and Age Concern Warwickshire, is providing compost for sale at six HWRCs in support of Compost Awareness Week, which is all about learning how to make a difference with compost.

The ninth annual Compost Awareness Week (CAW) got underway on Sunday and continues until Saturday 9th May. The theme for this year’s CAW is ‘Food for thought’, which promotes the use of compost for growing fruit and vegetables at home.
40 Litre bags of compost are for sale at £3 per bag at the following HWRCs:
Burton Farm HWRC, Stratford Upon Avon
Princes Drive HWRC, Leamington Spa
Hunters Lane HWRC, Rugby
Cherry Orchard HWRC, Kenilworth
Shipston HWRC, Shipston on Stour
Judkins HWRC, Nuneaton

Compost is the end product of a giant feast involving hundreds of different organisms - bacteria, fungi, worms and insects. These organisms break down organic material providing a nutrient-rich food product for your garden and will help improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels, and keep your soil’s PH balance in check while helping to suppress plant disease.

It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and it will help buffer soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it.

Every year thousands of tonnes of kitchen and garden waste are thrown in the dustbin, which usually ends up in expensive, unsightly and environmentally damaging landfill sites.

We can all make our own compost with our own household kitchen and garden waste or making the ‘Greener Choice’ by buying peat-free composts containing recycled materials.

Warwickshire residents can do their bit to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill,  even for households that are already composting, new research has found that almost half of the food waste in their rubbish bins could have been put in the compost bin.

Did you know for example that composting at home for just one year can save global warming gases equivalent to all the CO2 your kettle produces annually, or your washing machine produces in three months? (source: WRAP)

Simply put your biodegradable material in a compost bin and leave it to breakdown for a few months. The end result is a rich nutritious crumbly compost which can be dug into the garden to improve soil structure. It can also be used as a mulch to suppress weeds and improve drainage.
