Warwickshire project is music to young people’s ears

A Warwickshire County Council project is helping a group of young people from Stockton take to the airwaves.

The Stockton Music Project was set up after young people attending the county council’s Rural Mobile Youth Project expressed an interest in learning how to write and produce music to benefit the community.

So the six-week project was created in partnership with the Hub @ Blackwell and with funding from Orbit Heart of England.

The 25-strong group were involved in all aspects of music production including an introduction to Ejay software, creating and developing their own tune, music editing and designing a CD cover.

They had the opportunity to have their song played on Kenilworth’s Abbey FM – a radio station based at the town’s Youth and Community Centre, run by young people for young people – last week. They also learned how to become a radio presenter.

Carla Harris, Mobile Rural Youth Worker for Warwickshire County Council’s Youth Service, said: “The young people really have enjoyed this project and have worked incredibly hard to come up with something that can benefit the whole community.

“Not only does it give them something to do but it encourages them to try something new and develop their personal and team-working skills.”

Helen Kendrick, Involvement Officer from Orbit Heart of England, said: “We are delighted that this project has been such a success and we are proud to support Warwickshire County Council’s Youth Service in their community work.”
