Discover what you’re missing at Country Parks

Thousands of people visit Warwickshire’s Country Parks each year, but still to many they remain an unexplored domain.

To demonstrate the huge array of activities and attractions on offer, Ryton Pools Country Park is holding a Discovery Day on Sunday, June 14th, from 11am to 3pm.

Senior Countryside Ranger with Warwickshire County Council, Craig Earl, explained more about the event; “The Discovery Day at Ryton Pools is the ideal time to visit, whether you are a regular visitor or a newcomer. You will get to see the wide range of things that the park can offer and learn about some of the behind the scenes work that we do with partner organisations.

“Lets be honest we’re all having a pretty tough time of it at the moment. Money is tight and spending it wisely is the name of the game. Now more than ever we need great value ways of spending our leisure time.  Ryton Pools Country Park (and its sister parks across the county) fits the bill perfectly. It’s cheap, fun and healthy – a breath of fresh air for us all.

“On the day the Rangers will be on hand to lead activities and guided walks and to welcome you to the park. In the ‘Courtyard’ there will be a reception tent where you can collect your Discovery Day Pack. This will help you get the most out of your visit and show you where the various activities are situated and how to find them.  Don’t worry if this is your first time at Ryton Pools. The directions will be clear and one of the great things about the park is that the path network is very easy to follow.”

Attending the Discovery Day are:

T’ai Chi in the Park:
A great opportunity to learn all about this ancient and fascinating martial art that seeks to nurture good health and wellbeing. A trained instructor will be on hand to answer all your questions and they’ll even give you a chance to take part in one of the four FREE introductory sessions that run throughout the day (Session times -12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm). If you like it then remember to come along on the ‘T’ai Chi in the Park’ events on Thursday mornings (until Thursday 9th July). Get in touch for details.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust:
Ryton Wood is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its butterfly species but it is also a great habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
Mike, the Trust Warden will have a stand at the entrance to the wood and will explain all about how the ancient woodland is managed and the wildlife that calls it home. You can then go in to see for yourself.

Warwickshire Geological Conservation Group:
The existence today of Ryton Pools Country Park is rooted in the distant past. Step back in time and discover the origin of the rich sand and gravel deposits that made the area so suited for quarrying. You’ll also learn of the early humans who inhabited the region half a million years ago when the mighty River Bytham dominated the landscape. The Warwickshire Geological Conservation Group will be set up near Pagets Pool and will bring to life the important geology of Ryton.

Leamington Angling Association
The members will reveal the fish species that are found in the pool and may even have some live specimens for you to look at.
Over the years there have been some whoppers come out of Ryton Pool including a Common carp of over 28lb and an 18lb pike! There are even rumours of a gigantic 40lb carp patrolling its murky depths.
Live Reptiles
A local reptile expert who has led events for us in the past returns to show you the fascinating creatures in her menagerie.

Coventry Model Engineers
As usual the miniature trains will be running around the ¼ mile track. This is always a popular activity for children and adults alike. Don’t miss the opportunity to have a ride on one of the engines.

Craig added: “This is a taste of the things that will be on offer and hopefully we will be able to add to the list of confirmed activities as we get nearer the time. Keep checking the website for updates. Of course this event is nothing without you, so please come along and find out just how much good value fun is to be had at Ryton Pools Country Park.”
