Young community heroes celebrated in Warwickshire
Young people who have made a positive contribution in Warwickshire are being recognised at the annual Crimebeat High Sheriff Young People awards next month.
The awards are presented by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire, Lady Kilmaine, and recognise the projects that are helping young people stay safe and out of trouble in their community.
Four winning groups have been nominated to receive this year’s awards, and they are:
* Streetz R Watching (co-ordinated by the Whitnash POD, Leamington)
* Stop Knife Crime project (Co-ordinated by the Benn and Brownsover PODS in Rugby)
* Anti Bullying DVD project (Co-ordinated by members of the King Edward VI school Sixth Form, Nuneaton)
* Good Days 2 – Violent crime project (Co-ordinated by young people in Nuneaton & Bedworth participating in the Good Days 2 programme, delivered by PaYP)
Each project tackles issues such as bullying, drugs, graffiti or anti-social behaviour. They aim to improve the life of young people and make a positive impact on their community.
The winners will be presented with their awards during a special ceremony at Hatton Country World, Warwick, on Friday 19 June 2009.
Crimebeat, which is funded by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire and supported by the private sector, is managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme. It aims to reduce crime, the fear of crime and create safer communities. This initiative enables and empowers young people to make a real difference and also encourages them to feel part of the community.
Warwickshire High Sheriff Lady Kilmaine, said: “Warwickshire Crimebeat gives young people a chance to make a real difference to their life and that of the community. They are tackling some very real issues with creativity and initiative, and I congratulate them for their efforts.”
Michael Maguire, Head of Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, said: “Young people across the county have been involved in some fantastic Crimebeat projects aimed at making a positive contribution to their community.
“These awards reflect the effort that they have put in and celebrate the success they have achieved.”
