County calls for voters to get to the polls - Nun & Bed
Warwickshire County Council chiefs are making a plea for residents to use their vote and have a say at the county council elections next Thursday (June 4th).
This year, the County Council elections run alongside those for the European Parliament and polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm.
At the last election in 2005, 192 candidates including incumbents stood for election across the county, 38 of which stood in Nuneaton and Bedworth. This year, the total number of candidates countywide is 250, with 58 candidates contesting seats in the borough’s 14 divisions.
There are currently almost 90,000 living in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough who are eligible to vote.
2005’s county council election coincided with a General Election. Turnout at the last county council elections in 2005 was 60.25% across the borough.
Jim Graham, chief executive of Warwickshire County Council, said: “The county council has a huge impact on the daily lives of every one of its residents.
"It is involved in the running and overseeing of schools, getting rid of our waste, helping older people live at home, dealing with fire and rescue, registering your new baby, providing and other educational opportunities, social care services for young and older people, the Fire and Rescue Service, the Trading Standards Service, highways and other public rights of way and planning advice as the strategic planning authority.
“Therefore, we hope that residents will reflect the importance to their lives of the authority and use their vote on June 4th.”
