Start cycling for summer

As cycling increases in popularity as a way of beating the rush hour queues, getting fitter and doing some good for the environment, Warwickshire County Council has launched a new dedicated web page for people looking to start cycling.

These could be first time cyclists or those returning to the saddle after many years. Warwickshire County Council wants to encourage as many possible to start cycling this summer.

Laura Vesty, Sustainable Travel Officer with the county council, said: “It’s really unpleasant getting into a hot car and sitting in a traffic jam. It’s much more enjoyable to travel by bike, you can de-stress and you get a terrific sense of freedom and achievement.

“Most people will have a bike somewhere at home and so it might just need a dust off or a service at a local bike shop. Bikes are low cost and there are a number of helpful bike shops in Warwickshire. Or for a good quality second hand bike, people can visit a project like the Recycle Warehouse in Warwick.”

Useful information for people starting cycling can from today be found at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/startoutcycling which includes a link to some cycle travel maps for Warwickshire’s main towns.

There are a number of events going on this summer to celebrate cycling:
Bike Week 13th to 21st June
Big Bike Ride from Coventry Memorial Park to Kenilworth and back 21st June
Extraordinary Cycle Event on Leamington Parade 26th July
Warwick Cycle Races 6th September
