Chance to sign up to activities for Learning Disability Week
A live music workshop is just one of the many activities being provided by Warwickshire County Council during Learning Disability Week.
In partnership with Mencap, Warwickshire County Council is raising awareness of Learning Disability Week from Monday 22 to Friday 26 June, by showcasing the many services that it provides throughout Warwickshire.
Warwickshire Learning Disability Partnership Board will be hosting an Open Week at the Newbold Centre, Leicester Street, Leamington Spa where there will be a range of workshops, taster sessions and information displayed to promote awareness of Learning Disabilities. Everyone from across the county is welcome to take part and view the displays; whether you are a person with a learning disability, a carer or a member of the community interested to find out more.
Activities include workshops in live music, dance for health and graphic recording which is a system of visual communication. There will be sessions about carers’ support, travel training, and health action plans to ensure that people with a learning disability get the same life chances. Members of the public are also encouraged to attend a talk about volunteering opportunities and find out how they can give something back to the community.
Staff will be on hand to give friendly and informal advice from 10am - 4pm from Monday 22-Friday 26 June about a wide range of topics including housing, health, jobs, advocacy organisations, Activ8 Arts, The Learning Disability Partnership Board and much more.
For a full list of activities and to book a place at one of the sessions log onto http://warwickshire.ldpb.info email ldpartnershipboard@warwickshire.gov.uk or telephone 01926 430 492.
Jackie Grove, Project Manager for Warwickshire County Council, said: "This special week is a great way to raise awareness and understanding of learning disability. It is an opportunity for members of the public and organisations to find out more about how people with a learning disability choose to live their lives and be offered the same opportunities and choices as everyone else.
We would welcome all members of the community, whether they are connected to someone with a learning disability or not, to come and find out more about what we do and to hear about volunteering opportunities."
Warwickshire’s Learning Disability Partnership Board works with adults with learning disabilities across the county to ensure that they have more choice, control and independence over their lives.
Learning Disability Week is a national awareness week run by Mencap. This year’s theme is "Changing Places, Changing Lives" as sometimes society is unaware of the difficulties faced by people with profound and multiple learning disabilities because of limited changing facilities.
Warwickshire County Council is supporting Mencap’s campaign to improve people’s quality of life and appeal for fully accessible toilets at large public places. Further details about the campaign will be released during Learning Disability Week.
