Teachers pave way for pupils’ future

Teachers are discovering just what it takes to pave the way to a future in construction and engineering at an event next week.

The Warwickshire teachers are leaving the classroom and getting their hands dirty on a Kier construction site at Warwick University on Wednesday 8th July.

The day has been organised by Julie O’Toole from the Warwickshire Education Business Partnership, a part of Warwickshire County Council, in conjunction with Construction Skills and Kier Construction.

The main aim of the event is to support the teaching of the new Specialised Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment. Teachers will hear from Engineers, Quantity Surveyors and Health and Safety officials about the reality of the Construction industry today.

They will also hear about the skills and qualifications needed by young people to enter various jobs within the industry.

The idea of the day is to create an opportunity for teachers to take information and case studies back to the classroom to enliven curriculum teaching. This will not only benefit Diploma learners, but any students studying construction.

Julie O’Toole said; “The Construction and Built Environment Diploma is, as are all the new Diplomas, very employer focussed delivering a unique blend of academic and work based learning.

“Kier are one of a number of companies offering to support students in this learning process. Continued employer support of this kind is invaluable to the teacher and the learner and is very much appreciated.”
