New library charges explained
Warwickshire Libraries have issued more information about how new charges, for using People’s Network computers, will operate.
All library members will still receive 30 minutes free time on internet-linked computers per day but charges will apply thereafter.
The charges are being introduced, on July 1, to help the Library & Information Service keep costs down as the recession bites and budgets tighten. Library members will be charged at the rate of £2 per half-hour . Non-members will pay £2.50 for each 30-minute session.
“It was a case of ‘cutting our cloth’ to make necessary savings,” said Ayub Khan, Head of Libraries (Strategy). “However, we are really pleased that some free time will still be available to our members on People’s Network computers in all 34 libraries.
Ayub explained that the payment system had been designed to be as user-friendly as possible, and a set of straightforward instructions had been prepared to guide people through the process.
“Basically, users will log onto a computer with their library card and PIN. This will give them 30 minutes free time per day to be used in one session or more. Staff will help people to set up an account for extra minutes with an initial payment of £2. After that they will be able to top up in amounts of 50p or more.
”A balance button will enable users to check the time they have left on their account and a lock button will allow them to leave the computer they are working on to top up their minutes. Any unused paid-for time will remain credited to their account for three years.
"As well as the People’s Network, most libraries have separate computers which can be used to search the catalogue, make online reservations, renew items, book PN computers and access a wide range of online services - for free. Children will still be able to access ‘Walled Garden’ websites free of charge."
