Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landing with Warwickshire Museum and Heritage Education
Lunar fun in Warwick this weekend, plus a summer-long extravaganza of family Moon science and craft workshops.
This weekend, the world will be marking forty years since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the moon – and Warwickshire County Council’s Warwickshire Museum service and Heritage Education will be making sure we celebrate the date in style.
Don’t miss the special exhibitions, children’s workshops and lots of local memories of this momentous day, forty years ago. Plus, at the end of the month, some very special exhibits will be arriving in Warwick … a number of moon rock and soil samples from the lunar landings.
Head to Market Square in Warwick on Sunday 19th July, from 11.00am – 4.00pm for ‘Once in a Blue Moon’, a day-long event for all ages. Experience weightlessness just like an astronaut by having a go on the gyroscope, make an elastic-band moon buggy and visit the ‘Once in a Blue Moon’ exhibition, which is currently running in Market Hall Museum. T
The gyroscope and entry to Market Hall Museum are free of charge, height restrictions may apply to the gyroscope and making a moon buggy costs £2.50 per child.
Also, throughout the summer, Heritage Education will be running special ‘Count Down to Blast Off!’ family-friendly workshops that cover everything from star-gazing to jewellery making. These workshops will run every Wednesday from the 22nd July – 26th August throughout the summer holidays from Market Hall.
Make a working telescope, launch a balloon rocket, build a Roman moon goddess shrine, create a magical Moth ornament for your garden and learn about jewellery-making to create moon-inspired trinkets. These special workshops culminate in building your own future space craft from recycled materials!
The ‘Count Down to Blast Off!’ workshops are suitable for children aged eight years and over and must be booked. Tickets cost £5.00 each and can be booked by calling 01926 412069. The ‘Once in a Blue Moon’ exhibition will be running from 11th July – 20th September 2009.
