Heritage education to transport Warwick to the seaside for the day
Each Friday this summer holiday will be an extra special occasion for Warwick’s children and families this year – thanks to Heritage Education’s ‘Fantastic Fridays’.
From vintage cars to real, live bees, going on a bug hunt or meeting a Roman soldier in all his armour, a real treat will be in store! All activities are a creative and hands-on chance to discover more about Warwickshire’s history
Join the ‘Cool Centurions’ in Market Hall Museum from 10.00am – 3.00pm on Friday 24th July. A chance to meet some soldiers from the Roman army and try on some of their armour for yourself – plus make a Roman artefact to take home! It is free to meet the soldiers, £2.50 for craft activities.
On 31st July, a Bug Hunt for all the family will be taking place with Keeper of Natural History, Steven Falk, at Hill Close Gardens. See what creepy crawlies you can find and make a beeswax candle to take home. Spaces are limited on the Bug Hunt and cost £5 – please call 01926 412069 to book.
A cavalcade of classic cars will be rolling into Warwick’s County Record Office for ‘Rev and Go’ on Friday 7th August between 10.00am and 3pm, in partnership with Coventry Transport Museum. Come down and have a look at the grand old cars of yesteryear and make your own car of the future from recycled materials (£2.50 per child).
There is a chance to spend the day fossil hunting on Friday 14th August, when Jon Radley (Keeper of geology, Warwickshire Museum) will be guiding the annual Family Fossil Hunt at Cross Hands Quarry.
Families can dig for their own fossils and take home any that they find! Tickets for this event (priced £14 per person or £30 for a group of three, must include one adult) are strictly limited and need to be booked by calling 01926 412069.
The highlight of this summer’s events will be on Friday 21st August, when a taste of the seaside comes to the garden at St John’s Museum from 11.00am – 3.00pm for Warwick-on-Sea. Complete with donkeys to pet, ice cream for sale and a Punch and Judy show, it’s the perfect place to be for a traditional seaside experience….despite being a long way inland! This event costs £2.50 per child and there is no need to book, just drop in.
Last but not least, anyone who is familiar with the resident bees at Market Hall Museum should drop down to Market Square between 10.00am and 4pm on Friday 28th of August to meet the museum bee keeper and some of his bees, and find out lots more about how bees make honey and why they are so important.
