Love Food Hate Waste roadshow in Nuneaton

Nuneaton’s shoppers are to hear first hand the shocking statistic that they are throwing away more than £400 a year in food.

Next week the Love Food Hate Waste roadshow is coming to the town and will explain how people can save cash in thinking about their shopping and food use.

Based in the Asda store the roadshow being run by Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is taking place on Wednesday, July 29, and local people are invited along to meet the team and enter a free prize draw for a Love Food Hate Waste goody bag.

Love Food Hate Waste is a year long campaign by Warwickshire County Council, with Warwickshire Waste Partnership, in collaboration with national waste champion WRAP to tackle the high amounts of wasted food in the county.

A study by WRAP found the each household in Warwickshire is currently throwing away an average of £420 a year in wasted food.

Warwickshire County Council and the waste partnership are supporting WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign in an attempt to get local people to think about the food they are throwing in the bin.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “In these economic times people are thinking about how to save money and this seems like an incredibly easy way to save an awful lot of money, while also helping the environment.

“It must concern us all that nationally the UK is throwing away the equivalent of £10.2 billion worth of unwanted fruit, vegetables and other food each year.”

Most fruit and vegetables keep longer at lower temperatures. For example, oranges and pears will last up to two weeks longer if kept in the fridge.  While some bulky vegetables such as potatoes and onions can be stored in a cool dark area and refrigeration is not necessary.

The Nuneaton event is the first in a series of roadshows over the next 12 months Warwickshire County Council, with the support of Warwickshire Waste Partnership, will be holding to raise awareness on food waste, and what can be done to reduce it.

Following Nuneaton next week the next event in the county will take place at the Warwick Cycle Races on Sunday, September 6, in Warwick town centre.
