'Road Trip' drives down the risk for young people

Changing young people’s attitudes towards driving and road safety is the aim of a four-week programme being held in Stratford.

The ‘Road Trip pre-driving course’ aims to help 14 to 18-year-olds learn to drive in a controlled environment whilst teaching them essential road safety information.

It has been organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Rural Mobile Youth Project and Kineton Youth Centre in partnership with the Road Safety Team and the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon.

Around 50 young people are attending the course over the next month, covering the basics of driving as well as taking a mock theory and driving test. They will also learn skills through go-karting and a four-by-four experience.

After successfully completing the course, the young people will be awarded with an ASDAN accreditation.

Loz Grinnell, Stratford Area Youth Worker for Warwickshire County Council’s Youth Service, said: “Young people in Kineton told us that they would really benefit from a course like this to prepare them with the necessary skills for when they learn to drive on the road.

“The ‘Road Trip’ course will highlight the importance of safe, responsible driving – as well as highlighting the consequences of poor driving, such as speeding.”

Brian Pierce, Driver Education Services Manager for Warwickshire County Council, said: “Young people are at particular risk of injury in road traffic collisions during their first few years of driving when the combination of inexperience and over-confident can have disastrous consequences.

“Courses like ‘Road Trip’ can help reduce that risk as drivers spend more time understanding both the theory and practical side of driving in a controlled environment, before taking to the road.”
