The quest for ‘something to do’ is over
The long hot summer we were promised may have failed to materialise, as yet, but there is still plenty for children to do, whatever the weather, thanks to Warwickshire Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge.
The Summer Reading Challenge has been running for several years and encourages 4 to 12-year-olds to carry on reading through the school holidays. This year’s Challenge takes the fantasy theme of ‘Quest Seekers’ and is all about dragons, wizards, knights, fairies, outer space and adventure quests.
“Children can join the Summer Reading Challenge for free in any Warwickshire library and receive stickers and other incentives along the way,” said Stella Thebridge, Service Development Officer. “Those who read a total of six books, on any subject, by September 5, will receive a medal and certificate.”
Pre-school children can join in the fun, too, and work towards a special Quest Seekers Book Crawl certificate.
Supporting storytelling and craft events are being held in libraries across the county, including:
Fantastic Journeys - create your very own adventure kit including telescope, compass and map. (£2.50 per child)
Mythical Creatures - make your own from recycled materials with the help of artists from Junk Art. (£2.50 per child)
Imagine - Art and puppet-making workshops with illustrator and author Steve Smallman. (Free but please book in advance)
Design a shield - free competition with prizes. Entry forms in all Warwickshire libraries. Closing date September 5.
