Residents are eggstatic about new chickens
Older people at a Care Home in Nuneaton have a new lease of life after welcoming six chickens which they now look after.
The County Council’s Caldwell Grange Care Home is home to 35 older people, but the residents are kept on their toes by the chickens called Feathers, Marmalade, Gertie, Betty Boo, Daisy and Ginger, which they have taken under their wing for the past month.
Deb Adams, a Care Officer for Warwickshire County Council , said: “The residents have been buzzing about them. They go and sit and watch, and talk to them. The day they arrived you would have thought Santa had come early!”
“The residents and staff were watching the building of the house and pen from scratch, then spent the afternoon learning how to look after them,” she added.
“We have already had a couple of eggs, and we have started to introduce the chickens to the garden to roam free for a while.”
Jacky West, Manager of Caldwell Grange, said: “We try to offer a wide variety of activities and opportunities for our residents, and the chickens have been a real hit, they’ve brought a lot of fun and laughter.”
The chickens were bought from ‘Omlet’, an Oxfordshire based company who provide everything needed for keeping chickens.
