Shop project keeps community in the picture

A group of award winning photographers who have learning disabilities are expanding their service after opening a shop in Nuneaton.

The ‘Funtography’ group which is supported by Warwickshire County Council’s Community Support Services are based at ‘The Shop’ at 23e Abbey Street in Nuneaton.

Over the last eight weeks the 15 photographers have been displaying their work and offering their services. They have recently been commissioned to do a piece of work by Warwickshire County Counci’ls Positive about Young People and are keen to take on other orders.

They recently won first and second place in the Nuneaton Festival of Arts Photography Competition for the second year running.

When they are not taking pictures, some of the group help out charity Hub 119, who provide Family Support work in the Camp Hill area and run a crèche at the shop twice a week.

Darren Woods-Powell, who works with the group said: "We are all people who enjoy photography and the fact that we have won competitions is a bonus."

Julie Sutch, Manager of Warwickshire County Council’s Community Support Services in Nuneaton, said: “The shop offers space for children, parents and people with disabilities to meet and develop relationships.”

The shop is open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. 23e Abbey Street is open to the public and also has toilet facilities which offer a changing bed and hoist for people with physical disabilities.
