Eco Day success

Warwickshire County Council’s first ever Eco Day has been hailed a huge success with staff disposing of almost 4 tonnes of electrical items.

Held over a single day, and based around Warwickshire County Council’s headquarters in Warwick, the Eco Day offered staff the chance to dispose of unwanted electrical items from both home and the office in an environmentally friendly way.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “Many people do not realise that it is now illegal to dispose of small electrical items in your general waste and that it needs to be taken to recycling centres.

“To try and help staff to clear out any unwanted items we held our first Eco Day, and in just a few hours we filled 14 pallets with items, weighing 3.66 tonnes.”

Four of the pallets were filled with CRT (non flat screen) TVs and monitors, in total 77 were handed over, weighing just over a tonne, while the other ten pallets were filled with a host of other electrical items, ranging from hairdryers to alarm clocks and even old turntables – weighing in at 2.655 tonnes.

The Eco Day was run with Sims Recycling Solutions, the county council’s ICT disposal partner, and the world’s largest metal and electronics recycler.
