Amnesty for danger cylinders

Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service has reintroduced the LPG cylinder amnesty after its success in previous years.

LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) has become increasingly popular in domestic homes over recent years and, whilst it is useful, the cylinders have been identified in Home Fire Safety Checks, in which Fire and Rescue personnel as a major hazard around the house.

When used and stored correctly, LPG is perfectly safe.  However, in the event of a fire in the home, an LPG cylinder lying around under the stairs, in the loft, garden or garage could have disastrous consequences.

Firefighters are inviting residents in the Nuneaton and Bedworth area to take part in the amnesty which will run from September 14 to 25.  Any used or unwanted cylinders can be dropped into Nuneaton Fire Station or residents can call and arrange for them to be collected.

Crew Manager, Mark Rattray said:  “Our aim is to eliminate risks of fires and help the public to protect themselves.  This amnesty is an excellent way for people to ensure that a major hazard for fires is removed from their homes.

“This is a great opportunity to get rid of unwanted cylinders free of charge. By removing unwanted LPG cylinders you are removing any danger to yourselves, your family and fire crews.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is committed to making the county a safer place to live in and this is one of the ways that residents can help us to achieve this.”

As well as dealing with unwanted canisters, firefighters are also urging people to take advantage of home fire safety checks which identify and address fire hazards around the home.  Residents can call Nuneaton Fire Station on 02476 383131 and arrange for a free home fire safety check.
