Course helps parents explain relationships and sex

A Warwickshire County Council supported course helping parents in Kineton talk to their children about relationships and sex has proven a hit with the community.

“What shall we tell the children…about relationships and sex” is a course created by Coventry University in partnership with Coventry and Warwickshire Respect Yourself Campaigns and Mother’s Union.

It was co-ordinated by Warwickshire County Council’s Extended Services in partnership with Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign and Family and Parenting Support, and ran at Kineton High School last month.

The programme helps parents of 5 to 14-year-olds understand how they might address the subject appropriately before it’s too late, and find out how to best seize opportunities to start up a conversation with their children, rather than being put on the spot.

Carol Bunyard, Extended Services Strategy Officer, said: “We asked parents in the Kineton area whether they would benefit from a course focussing on how best to talk to their children about relationships and sex.

“Many thought this would be useful as they felt unprepared or embarrassed to discuss it if their son or daughter asked them a question. So ‘What shall we tell the children’ encouraged them to generate discussion around the topic, rather than being put on the spot.”

One of the parents who took part in the course said: “I have enjoyed the opportunity to gain a better understanding of issues relating to relationships and sex.

“I have also gained confidence in communicating with my children. Thank you for an informative and friendly course.”
