Seaside event packs a Punch

Recognising the increasing numbers of people opting for ‘staycation’ this year, Warwickshire County Council is offering the chance to go on a summer holiday to Warwick-on-Sea – for a few hours at least!

Despite being in the most landlocked county in the UK, Warwickshire residents are invited to St John’s House Museum to enjoy a Victorian seaside at ‘Warwick-on-Sea’ on Friday 21 August. There will be Punch and Judy shows, an ice cream stand and a donkey for children to pat.

Organised by the County Council’s Heritage Education Service, children and families can discover where people went on their holidays in the past and there will even be a chance to make a souvenir to take home.

The Punch and Judy performances take place at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm and people are welcome to bring their own picnic to eat in the grounds.

The event costs £2.50 per child to see the Punch Judy shows and to take part in craft activities. Adults’ admission is free. All ages are welcome, but children aged 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The event is just one of a host of activities being run by Heritage Education throughout the summer holidays. As well as the event in Warwick, ten venues across the county have offered children the chance to learn about holidays in the past and have made their own Punch and Judy puppets.

Rebecca Williams, Audience Development Officer for Community at Heritage Education, said: “This promises to be a great day out for the family and so much more besides the seaside.

"Children and families can unlock the past by looking at a range of artefacts and museum objects and it is also a wonderful opportunity to see St John’s House Museum and its stunning grounds.”
