A444 Griff works to start again soon

Work on Nuneaton’s Griff Island on the A444 is to get underway again on Monday, August 24, following the appointment of a new contractor.

All works stopped earlier this year following the collapse of Wrekin Construction Limited, but the works have been re-tendered and a new contractor has been appointed.

Work at Griff Roundabout is due to start on Monday 24th August 2009, and is expected to take approximately 18 weeks to complete. The new contractor carrying out the works is Carillion.

As part of the works traffic lights will be installed on three of the existing six arms, the A444 from the M6, A444 to Nuneaton and B4113 Coventry Road (Hill Top). In addition, there will be carriageway widening in some areas, new footpaths and cycleways, and the roundabout will be resurfaced.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Clearly the circumstances around these works have not been ideal, but hopefully now should get quickly back on track.

“We identified the improvements because of a continuing poor injury accident record at the roundabout. In 2007, Griff Roundabout was identified as the second worst accident location in Warwickshire. The project will also improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.”

This junction is one of the busiest in Warwickshire, and the main route between Nuneaton and surrounding area to the south and the M6 Junction 3. The whole works will be carried out under a 40mph speed restriction. This temporary speed limit has been imposed for safety reasons.

Most of the construction works will be carried out at night. These night works will reduce the construction period of the project and also minimise traffic flow disruption.

"The night work includes temporary night time road closures to the approaches to the works at various times during the construction phase on some of the arms. There will be regular updates on the progress of the project on the Warwickshire Web Site.

Cllr Cockburn added: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause but we will endeavour to carry out and complete the work as speedily and efficiently as possible.”
