Museum event is the bees knees
There will be buzz around Warwick on Friday 28 August when Market Hall Museum is turned into a hive of activity.
Organised by the County Council’s Heritage Education Service, Buzzin’ will give children and their families the opportunity to meet the museum beekeeper and some of his bees.
Warwickshire Museum has its own glassed-in bee hive where you can see the bees busy at work. Museum Beekeeper Mick Smith will give an insight into the fascinating world of bees and the journeys they make to produce honey.
Children will also get the chance to try the bees’ honey and make their own bee to hang in the garden and a skep, which is the traditional coiled design and forerunner of the modern beehive.
Participants will also learn about the much loved British Bumble Bee, the wild cousin of the honey bee, whose decline could threaten the British countryside as its existence is vital for the pollination of native flowers and plants.
The Buzzin’ event will take place at Market Hall Museum in Market Place from 10am-4pm on Friday 28th August.
The event costs £2.50 per child to take part in craft activities. Adults’ admission is free. All ages are welcome, but children aged 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
The event is just one of a host of activities being run by Heritage Education throughout the summer holidays. As well as the event in Warwick, ten venues across the county are offering children the chance to learn about bees and make their own bee puppet to take home.
